Meta has announced a new free verification badge for Facebook users, aiming to make it easier to identify real people as AI-generated fake accounts become increasingly common.
Unlike the company's paid Meta Verified subscription, this new verification system is available at no cost.
How the New Verification Works
To receive the badge, users simply need to record a short video selfie.
Facebook compares the video with existing profile photos to confirm that the account belongs to a real person. The verification process only takes a few minutes and does not require any subscription or payment.
Who Can Get Verified?
Not every Facebook account is eligible for the new badge.
To qualify, users must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have an account in good standing
- Follow Facebook's policies on fraud, scams, and deceptive behavior
Accounts involved in suspicious or inauthentic activity will not be approved.
At launch, Facebook Pages and Professional Mode (ProMode) accounts are not eligible for the free verification program.
Where the Badge Will Appear
Once approved, the verification badge will automatically appear across several Facebook services, including:
- Facebook Profile
- Facebook Marketplace
- Facebook Dating
- Facebook Groups
Meta also plans to expand the badge to Facebook Feed posts in a future update.
Users only need to complete the verification process once, and the badge will remain linked to their account across supported features.
Verification Doesn't Mean Endorsement
Meta emphasizes that the badge simply confirms the account belongs to a real person.
It does not guarantee that a user is trustworthy or officially endorsed by Facebook. Verified users must still follow the platform's Community Standards and Commerce Policies, just like everyone else.
Rolling Out in Stages
The feature is being released gradually, starting in selected regions before expanding worldwide.
Users who do not see the option immediately may receive access as the rollout continues.
Why This Matters
As artificial intelligence makes it easier to create convincing fake profiles, verifying real users has become increasingly important.
By offering a free identity verification system, Meta hopes to improve trust across Facebook's social features, especially in places where users interact with strangers, such as Marketplace, Dating, and Groups.
The new badge could help reduce scams, improve user confidence, and make online interactions safer without requiring users to pay for verification.
